The Elcometer Hexagonal Wet Film Combs are designed for wet film thickness measurements and come in a range of thickness scales.
The Elcometer 112 & 3236 Hexagonal Wet Film Combs are hexagonal precisions formed stainless steel wet film combs that are long lasting, reusable and supplied in a range of thicknesses measuring up to 3000μm. These six sided combs vary in size, giving either 24 or 36 measurement steps, depending upon the comb, thus providing increased accuracy.
Wet Film Comb Technique
Wet film combs have teeth of various lengths on their sides. The comb is dipped into the wet film and then removed. The wet film thickness lies between biggest value wet tooth and smallest value dry tooth values.
If the volume to solids ratio of the coating is known, then the wet film thickness can be used to predict the dry film measurement. As a rule of thumb dry film thickness will be 50% of wet film thickness. Elcometer offers a wide selection of wet film cobs to suit various applications.
The Elcometer 112 & 3236 Hexagonal Wet Film Combs can be used in accordance with:
• ASTM D 4414-A
• AS/NZS 1580.107.3
• BS 3900-C5-7B*

This is how to measure wet film thickness using a wet film thickness gauge, also known as a wet film comb.
Wet film combs measure wet film thickness, and are available in a variety of materials including stainless steel, aluminium and plastic, with various measurement scales ranging from 20µm to 3000µm.
How to measure wet film thickness using a wet film comb: place a comb perpendicular to and touching the substrate. Hold the comb in position and wait a few seconds until the teeth are wet. Remove the comb from the film. The wet film thickness lies between the biggest value ‘coated’ or ‘wet’ tooth and the smallest value ‘uncoated’ or ‘dry’ tooth.
Elcometer offer a wide range of wet film combs to measure wet film thickness.
