Casting Defects: The effect it has on Turbines and how we can detect this through Ultrasonic Testing
Several potential casting defect types can reduce overall material integrity which can, worst-case scenario, lead to catastrophic failure, no matter how mature or technologically advanced they may be. It is therefore, important to test cast parts on turbines as they are likely to obtain large and unpredictable mechanical forces.
Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is often the quickest and most cost-effective means of detection for casting defects, allowing for instant operator feedback on defects without the production disruptions or health & safety considerations that can be an issue with other techniques such as radiography.
UT & radiography are required to test for subsurface defects such as; porosity, cracks and inclusions which can be achieved by using the Elcometer FD700+ and FD800+.
Keep a lookout for our upcoming content on how UT is used to detect casting defects!
